About Gold Coast Vision Performance

Vision is in the brain! It starts with proper eyesight and good ocular health, but requires the visual pathways and brain to work with the structures of the eye to understand, process, and use the information that is seen. Vision is a dynamic process that is learned. When it functions properly, it helps us identify, organize, and interpret what the eyes see. When it is not functioning properly, even people with 20/20 eyesight and healthy eyes can experience serious difficulties with everyday actions like reading, writing, and moving around in space.

Functional vision includes proper eye teaming, eye focusing, eye movements, and the visual processing of information. People of any age can suffer from a functional vision issue. Whether you have a child who is struggling in school, an athlete who would like to enhance performance, or have had a traumatic brain injury, optometric vision therapy can help retrain the visual system to function at peak performance.

Vision therapy sessions are doctor designed and tailored for each patient to build or remodel neural pathways in order to enhance overall visual performance. During vision therapy, we use lenses and prisms, along with other specialized equipment, to lead patients trough guided exercises, in order to train, or retrain, the brain to send the correct impulses to the eye. This helps the patient make calculated, deliberate, and accurate eye movements, point the eyes at the correct place in space, and shift focus from near to far and everything in between. Ultimately, our goal for each patient is to achieve automaticity, or the effortless functioning of the visual system, in order to free up maximum attention for information acquisition and performance.

Standard Vision Screenings
Don’t Detect Functional Vision Problems

20/20 is a measure of eyesight, or the ability to perceive small, stationary objects from a distance. Even with a perfect score, children and adults can still have functional vision problems that impact day-to-day life. About 65% of the brain’s pathways are involved in the visual process, but only a fraction of those pathways are devoted to eyesight. Represented in the neurology, the visual process is much deeper than just eyesight!

Unfortunately, many “vision screenings” only test eyesight and are not a good indicator or predictor of deeper visual issues. According to the American Public Health Association, 1 in 4 students have visual problems that are serious enough to impede learning. These vision problems can make it difficult for children to learn and are often with associated behavioral issues. Gold Coast Vision Performance can help lay the foundation for positive learning through unique, patient-focused treatment.
